Gender, Culture and the Mediation of Women's Work
By Dr Yvonne Tasker, Professor of Film Studies, University of East Anglia, UK

Gender Studies asks questions about the complex ways in which culture perpetuates inequalities between men and women. This lecture presents a gender studies perspective on the work of media in this context. It looks at the ways in which western media covered the 2008 global downturn in specifically gendered terms. The lecture also describes how popular entertainment media echoed these themes, foregrounding the costs of recession to men over the burdens placed on women. In the process a tension between media images and political rhetoric on one hand and the experience of working women on the other is outlined. The lecture also seeks to make connections between this western context and the attempt to promote new cultures of female working in Japan associated with the term “womenomics”. Yvonne Tasker is the Course Director of the MA Gender Studies at UEA.

Yvonne Tasker is Professor of Film Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Yvonne's research is broadly concerned with the politics of popular culture. In current and recent work Yvonne has explored these issues in relation to popular constructions of "post-feminism"; gender and military culture on screen; action and adventure narratives; crime television. She is currently working with Professor Diane Negra on a new book of essays, 'Gendering the Recession'.
